A topic that’s haunted me for quite some time: twitter and languages. Why would that be a problem a native speaking maybe would ask, or a non-english-speaking for that matter.

I see twitter as this enormous room, where everybody talks to everybody. It’s one of the beauty of twitter in my mind. We’ve moved the conversation from closed (sms/email) to open.

But one thing happens when you move the conversation to the open, common space. The language and respect for differentiation becomes more important. Everyone is using twitter differently, as well as people speak different language & tongues just like in the ‘real world’.

It’s like those parties you go to and there’s one that doesn’t speak your language. You keep trying to move to english, or translate bits and pieces to that person who’s missing out. I like when everyone decides to switch to english – and just like that everyone is onboard. But.

Not everyone is comfortable in english, no matter how much we could wish for. A part of the conversation is lost and people tend to talk less. The same thing happens on twitter.

I’ve tried to keep one account for both swedish listeners and non-swedes. It’s working so so.. Some swedes are fed up with my english tweets and vice versa. And so far there’s no way people can filter messages well enough, like removing tweets with #swe. That’d be a beautiful solution, but question is when that feature will be implemented.

So I’ve decided to split me up in two. I don’t like the thought of it, of having two identities, two accounts, two passwords, etc but I will give it a try and see if it works better.

Life is an experiment, so here we go. @achaidoo is the english version of me and @achaido (only one o) remains swedish.

I have no idea about the outcome but please do let me know if this is a good idea or just me going crazy.

What’s the reason you do what you do? Just take a moment to reason and think about that. What’s the main driving force in your life? What do you feel is your mission with you undertakings.

Take the 18 minutes to watch this clip where Tony Robbins asks why we do what we do. It was a life changer for me.

If you have more time, see the movie, and keep reading, but this text is just a continuation of the thesis in this clip, and a sharing of my experience for the past two years of being an entrepreneur and doing what I really believe in, not because I have to do it, but because I want to.

There’s obviously rarely one reason only why we do what we do. It’s a combination of things, but the important one is the main reason and the driving force of your decisions. Think about what in life has been, and is fun, enjoyable and make a difference. For you and for others. What was the driving force? That you have to do it? That someone, or something forcing you to do it. Not likely.

You have to believe in what you do is right, believe there is a meaning to what you do, and the decisions you make. You have to believe co-operating is right, if you want to co-operate. You have to believe helping others is right, if you want to help others. You have to believe in change, if you want change. If you don’t believe in any of this, then don’t. Because then you believe in something else, and you should do that.

But belief without will is nothing. If you believe there need to be change, and you believe you can make a difference, you still have to want to change, and want to make a difference – for any of the believes to become true and reality. It is a synergy between the will and the belief combined that moves a person or organism to move from idea to action.

So you believe you have to do something, and you want to do that, there’s still nothing unless you actually act. Act is the sole manifest of your belief & will. If you do not act in line with your belief and your will, what’s left? The ideals is worth just about nothing. Your words become air, and bubbles that’s raise in to the sky and fade into history.

So unless you aim to act, and do act in line with your believes, then just stop waisting peoples time and energy about your hollow mumbojumno cause people are worth more than nothing. People who say they’re willing to do anything to make a vision become true, dreams reality and does act, they deserve better.

If you don’t believe in what you do. Then don’t do it.

I’m still in chock after what happened tonight. Something extraordinary, very beautiful.

It’s been surfaced for a while. The Start-Up Scene in Malmö is quite amazing as it is, but we all feel something is missing, and that something might have been born tonight. A few days ago Hampus Jakobsson sent out a survey asking some startups “what was the bottleneck for startups in Skåne“, and what we were missing. I responded to the open thread in Google Moderator

“I dream about a café, where people can work all days, meet other passionates & entrepreneurs. There could be representatives from those support orgs, to help out. A platform for meeting all the others that do stuff. Open. Social. Supportive.”

A dream that I’m not the only one envisioning, and during the past few weeks that’s becoming clear. At the MEDEA Do-Tanks, Sofia, Kajsa & I were discussing it and we couldn’t let go of the idea of realize a place like this. I tried to get hold of Hampus who I got indications from had the same thoughts, but he was off already for BBQ with the kids! I can’t blame him – it was one of the first really beautiful days in a long while.

I’m leaving MEDEA with frustration, I want to DO something, and I want to DO it now. Sofia & I take the bikes & rush off to Bar Italia to get a cup of awesome coffee and brainstorm about the idea. We’re determined to share our thoughts, to invite everyone into the process. Frustrated that Etherpad got killed by Google (who acquired AppJet half a year ago) we try with Google Docs. Frustration again: it’s not real-time. Crap. I want real-time. It’s too hot at Bar Italia so we leave with the question: Eat or Continue? Neither of us want to stop. We’re already too excited to pause.

Thinking of place to go, naah.. let’s go home and continue: WiFi, power & food. Annoyed about the Google Docs fiasco I go off to twitter asking: “I need a real-time write-board to share. EtherPad is dead and Google Docs suck, what else is ther? Tip, plz!” and in no time I get all kids of answers, one of them saying that Etherpad turned into an Open Source project; OpenEtherpad and at the same time Hampus is calling me back and we can’t stop drifting away and just decide we’ll meet up on Monday 08.40 @ Solde to continue the talk and invite more people.

Monday seemed like an eternity away and with OpenEtherPad in our hands we just started to compile, what was going to be the most amazing real-time collaboration I’ve ever experienced. We spread the link to the Pad on Twitter & Facebook and just like that people joined in, filling in with thoughts, reflections, suggestions and the discussion totally exploded.

We all saw this document grow with beautiful colors, representing each one of us, creating the whole. From being just random thoughts, sections was created and simultaneously as we discuss in the chat we organize and add all kinds of stuff to the Pad: How to finance, where to locate it, name suggestions, how it should look & feel, we even started to search for suitable spaces around the center.

It’s impossible to reproduce the feeling of all this happening. Just there, then, with everyone – adding on, constructing together, with very loose ties but with a common ground of moving forward to DO IT.

This is a collective dream, and tonight we( Sofia Franzen (only GeekGirl) Erik Starck, Shane Murray, Jonathan Lavigne, Alessandro, Hampus Jacobsson, Alfred Gunnarsson, Fredrik Davidsson, Peter Neubauer, Anders Frick, Silvia Man, Christian Tigerblad, Steve Jennings) did an amazing work of art, collaboratively sketch up a vision, all on different locations with one connection – the one machine – building a foundation in real-time, and if you haven’t tried OpenEtherPad, do it..
What we created was the foundation of a common space for creative minds to hang out, to meet other creative minds, to work together, live and breath what we’re here for: to create and to make things happen. In its essence it’s a café, open to everyone, but which is fundamentally different from other cafés in one sense: You can hang out as much (or as little) as you’d like, all days, all nights. You can sign up for monthly membership if you’d like or just buy coffees as you come. There’s models for everyone. We’d also like to see the support organizations there with their staff, hanging out with us, in the space where it happens – and supporting the creators & doers in every way they can. This way, we can create a region that’s way more wicked than any other. So let’s go and make this real.

And to you who don’t believe it’s possible: “Those who say that it cannot be done should get out of the way of those who are doing it!” as Jardenberg puts it.

The idea was born when I was going to the beach one sunny day in 2000 was going to the beach and I couldn’t find any chair that easy to bring along. I built a prototype which ended up in the storage. Then in 2003 I came back to the same place with new energy and motivation to tweak and finalize the project.

an idea…

…about give life to a chair, with minimal elements, with joy to use. Clear lines, high quality, lightness in focus. Shine should be easy to bring with you, whether you’re by foot, on a bike, bus or by car. The idea is simple. Folded, the chair has minimal dimensions, and is light and easy to bring. Unfolded it’s a pleasure to sit in.

a detail…

…is crucial for the overall experience. With few details it’s even more important they’re precise, as your eye will notice every one of them.

Aluminium & mesh is the materials to be used. Aluminium, as the very lightweight but strong and shapeable material. Mesh gives a soft and enjoyable sitting experience and the contrast to the metal.

The mesh will be the friction to keep the chair folded & kept together.

Shine…

…was born on a shiny day, and is meant to give shine to people, and making the beach visit just a little easier. It’s still just a vision and Shine is looking for a producer to make reality of that vision.

One of my favorite installations @ thoughtmade is the ±pole by Ishac Bertran. It’s basically a physical user interface consisting of wooden blocks on a lit surface. These blocks have different properties and as you move them, you see the corresponding movement on another projected surface. Check the video, but watch out, it’s hard to let go.

User Stories

Yesterday I got introduced to User Stories, a method of working with agile software development. It’s based on small, precise stories that explain what the user should be able to do, rather than what the system can do. I’m already convinced this is a great way of working, coming from a design background. But hey, these stories are written on pieces of paper, sitting on a wall. I totally understand the reason behind this, but wouldn’t it be nice if my colleagues on the other side of the world could follow the process and be a part of the development? The easy way would be to put up a camera and broadcast the wall, but there might be a better way.

NoteyApp by @elliottkember

The Mashup

Imagine every Post-it or Card would be tracked just like the wooden blocks, and as you move them, they’d change in real-time, visible in a common digital space, where all team members, could interact, comment & keep track on the changes and more importantly it’s done with version-tracking so that you can see how the priorities has changed over time and you could always keep an eye on the big vision at the same time as you see the details for each and every story.

Maybe this already exists or maybe it doesn’t make any sense at all.. but maybe it does, and most probably it could be applied to any other usage where you would like to work with physical stuff but still make it visible in real-time to people that’s not there and then.

I don’t know about you but I think it’s wicked cool. Connecting the analog world to the digital, local-physical with the global-virtual. Let me know what you think, will ya. I’m not going to develop this, so feel free to use the thoughts, it’s today’s giveaway. Contact Ishac Bertran if you want to know more about the ±pole.

I was ‘googling’ and I think I was going to ‘google’ for something about Facebook. I usually type more than one letter before I even reflect but this time I got stuck on the F. And Facebook was the first suggestion in the auto-complete list. I just got curious about what was hiding behind the other letters in the alphabet. There’s nothing deeper to it. Trivia: The 5th suggestion on letter W is www.facebook.com. Astonishing.

A text by the architect Alberto Campo Baeza

Me in this project: 3D / Animations / Visualizations.

Word from the architect Alberto Campo Baeza

We would like to make “the most beautiful building” for the MA (Andalusia’s Museum of Memory) in Granada. A Museum that wishes to convey all the History of Andalusia. Back in the time of the Romans, Strabon described the inhabitants of Andalusia as “the most cultured of the Iberians, who have laws in verse.”

Our project for the MA is a building in the line of the Headquarters of the CAJA GRANADA Saving Bank which we completed in 2001. We propose a podium building measuring 60m x 120m and three stories high, so that its upper floor coincides with that of the lower body of the podium of the main building of CAJA GRANADA. And also its façade. Everything is arranged around a central patio, in ellipsoidal form, in which some circular ramps connect the three levels and create a spatial tension of great interest.

And to top it all, as if it were a Gate to the City, a strong vertical piece arises, the same height and width as the main building of the CAJA GRANADA. It appears in front of the highway that circles Granada like screen-façade on which to send messages over large plasma screens that will cover it entirely. Like Piccadilly Circus in London or Times Square in New York.

The new building, silent in its forms, is resounding in its elements to communicate messages of the new millennium in which we are already immersed.

This was a proposal for a competition in Borås, Sweden. It’s a glass house, with a steel structure, like a mesh around the building. It should be able to function as a café and public space, and in the winter as a garden.

We wanted to make it as open as possible and and in the night it would act as a chandelier in the park where it’s situated.

The interior consists of three solid volumes, the kitchen, restrooms and a storage. The rest of the space is a continuous space, that merges the space between the interior and exterior.

Good things come in three, they say. I was just about to post a text, asking you to help me survive. I’m totally broke but I’ve postponed the deadline for taking another job a few times because I sincerely want to focus on ambadoo and I believe in nothing more than this project. It’s what I’ve been working on for the past 18 months 24/7 and what I want to continue doing – dedicatedly make yours, and your friends life easier.

I was just talking to an angel.

Aron Solomon from Think Global School just called me up, ask me how everything was going. I told him about my situation, that we finally got the development up running again but there was still no ramen noodle capital and I urgently had to take an employment somewhere. The talk takes a radical turn when he asks me how much my expenses are and for how long I need to survive. With the answer he replies: “I’m your angel. Give me your bank details and I’ll transfer the money today. Have a good day.” Then we hang up. I’m still in chock, having hard times believe that this just happened.

Thank you Aron, you’re truly an angel.

Blessings

2006: A proposal for a competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. We’re asked to give a suggestion of a square and the strip of park on both sides of the square.

We did an analysis of the city and the area and based the proposal on a few of the characteristics of the area. The harbour, axis, movement, grid, green wedge and the canals were some of these elements.

The square was made in the mid-90’s but the the space was empty and dead. We proposed a urban garden, with bridges connecting the park on both side, making the square integrate to the surroundings.

I didn’t see this one coming. Twitter squires Tweetie, and Lorem joins the Twitter team and Tweetie become “Twitter for iPhone” and there’s already an iPad version in the works.

It’s actually quite an amazing step. Both for Twitter and for Atebits. Twitter realize that most of its users are heavily dependent on apps to fullfill the Twitter experience.

For me, and for many others, tweetie, both for the iPhone & Mac is, and has been the #1 Twitter app. And even if it haven’t been spelled out, it’s almost been the “official” Twitter app for quite some time now.

Tweetie has won the Apple Design Award, with all rights. It’s a delight to use it, and in many ways it’s set the standards for (user) experience. We take for granted that “pull down” equals refresh and “swipe” a tweet is a shortcut to all you can do with that tweet, without leaving the current view.

If time spent on the iPhone would be measured I’m sure my use of tweetie would be near 80% and remaining time I think I spend in the camera & lo-mob to take and edit photos shared via tweeite.

I love Tweetie & and Twitter to (ate)bits, and I really wish this partnership can push the Twitter experience even further. I’m glad there will now be an official-official Twitter app, and that even more people now will find the delight I, and many others already do.

May I have Tweetie for iPad already?

Here’s a little collection of the best places (I’ve been to) in Madrid. I lived, and loved the city for about two and a half years. I loved it for it’s way of living. You go out, you eat out, you meet out, and you go home only if you really have to. I spent most of my free time in restaurants, cafés, bars & clubs, and those listed are the ones I came back to over and over again. There’s so much more to explore, and since I’ve been gone I’m sure some have closed and many new have opened.

Hotel De Las Letras (Roof Terrace)

One of those secluded places that you need to know about to find. Walk into the Hotel and take the elevator to floor 7, then walk another floor up and enjoy a little oasis, away from the honking horns and the massive traffic of Madrid. Have a drink or two in one of their white divans after the night has arrived. Trivia: If you overlook the western wall, you’ll find a roof terrace with jacuzzi one floor down. Romantic activity can be seen ;)

Laydown

Well hidden just a stone throw away from Plaza Españna this is most probably the best (if not the only) place to get a brunch in the city. The spaniards have not yet understood the concept of brunch but luckily there’s other people that does. Just lay down, cause that’s what you do in the all-white setting. And take your time, they serve the brunch until 18.00.

El Junco

Is where you go to enjoy live music every day of the week. Sundays are know for its great jam sessions (runs between 23.00 and 04.00). A perfect way to start the week! On Fridays & Saturdays it’s converted to the most packed club with funky grooves. Free entrance, but it’s swedish prices on beers & drinks.

Bazaar

If you don’t know it, you can’t tell this place is part of a chain with more than 25 restaurants, both in Madrid, Barcelona & Girona. Every restaurant is a concept of its own but the common factor is: modest prices, good service, Philippine staff & centered aligned menus! It’s one of Madrid’s best & most beautiful restaurants, but be in time, cause you can’t book a table.

Pink Sushiman

The only sushi train in Madrid (or was, when I lived there). You sit along the deep, narrow train, tempting you with plates of all kinds ’til you can’t fill your stomach with more sushi. Trivia: Once Tim and I had 40+ plates when we’re done!

El Cuatro De Xiquena

My breakfast restaurant during the time I was working for Alberto Campo Baeza. It’s just one minute up Calle Almirante and you enjoy the best Croisant a la plancha you’ve ever tasted! It’s also quite amusing watching the porteros starting their day with a glass of whiskey (and cigar, when you’re allowed to do that)

Lateral

My favorite, all categories. Delicious modern tapas, in an environment that’s just what it needs to be; relaxing & urban at the same time. Behind the bar is a wall of Absolute bottles in all colors. It’s one of the few place where you can pick anything on the menu and you’ll just say: yum.

Rosales 20

Very close to Templo de Debod is this little upperclass neighbor bar, with its outdoor terrace. Have a beer & some aceitunas for just 3€, watch the people of all generations walk pass, especially on Sundays after they’ve all been to church.

Cacao Sampaka

If you’re into chocolate this is the place to go.

This is the cutre version of Hotel de las Letras. From a very narrow terrace, which only fit one table in width, you can watch the sunset and the view of southern Madrid while having some calamares & a cold caña.

Mercado de San Miguel

during the years I was living in Madrid this place was more like a ruin than anything else, but since then it’s been restored / refurbished and is easily the nicest market I’ve seen in a long time. Worth just taking a walk inside, and imagine how it was 100 years ago.

Is the park below the Palace. Far less populated than parque del retiro, which was the royal park earlier. It’s a bit of a walk to get there, but if you want some time off, overlooking the palace it’s a nice choice.

One of the smallest bars in town. One street off from the popular plaza in La Latina. It’s cheap, nice atmosphere and has the best hummus plate. Often funk coming out of the speakers.

I haz WiFi. Many people sit here all day long to enjoy cafe condensados and internet. They don’t serve other than drinks so you have to leave once every now and then to get food. But just outside is one of the best pizza places around so there’s nothing to worry about.

A true treasure on the northern side of calle Génova. It’s a restaurant with 6 meters to ceiling, tiled floor, old wooden doors and a cosy black sofa in the back of the place. It’s next to the circular British embassy and its tanks outside.

Rincon means corner, and this corner café is just perfect for the spring, to read a book & have a coffee in the afternoon sun. The food’s good too and if you’re bold enough go for a mojito, but it’s hard to stop at only one. Trivia: the owner is a swedish woman, but you couldn’t tell.

Bodega La Ardosa

If you say good Irish, I say Ardosa. A magical little place, where the waiters keep an amazing track of all the good stuff you order, without writing anything down. Chose from a plethora of beers & wines in this authentic not-to-miss place. Trivia: there’s a chalk board with records of beer-intake. Not to try at home.

Hotel Me (roof terrace)

Plaza Santa Ana is the most touristic area of Madrid, and this place was refurnished in 2007 and has become the most fashionable place to stay at & visit. Very trendy, very cool, and a very nice roof terrace. Trivia: I’ve been to one of the suites, that had one living room and one bed room. TV’s in both of them. Didn’t stay for the night though.

A truely spanish place, where the waiter screams & shouts and where the floor is full of trash. It’s packed any time you go, but it’s really an extraordinary experience. On the way pass by Parque del Retiro.

La Sueca

is owned and run by a swedish girl, hence the name. It’s open from early morning to late night, and if you miss Sweden and it’s food this is a much better choice than IKEA.

A modern art museum designed by the starchitects Herzog & De Meuron. Worth a visit just for the extravagant building itself. Next to the muesum is a vertical garden, designed by Patrick Blanc. It’s a stunning work of art, from the very conceptual idea of suspending an old brick building with a new body on top of itself, of rusted steel and laser cut patterns, to a the details of the on-site, one piece stair case inside.

I can’t help but love this illustration of VIV Mag.

At #iConf a few weeks ago we were asked by @Aral Balkan during his talk when we last had an experience of delight, and whether it was digital or not. This to me, is pure delight. It’s amazing to see how something like a magazine, usually seen and read on printed media, can take new shape in a digital form.

It’s hard to even compare VIV Mag with printed magazines. A new world opens up, and you can start to experience the content rather than reading it. A few months ago Bonnier R&D illustrated their Mag+ vision, another teaser of how we’ll experience books and magazines in the future.

And the future is near. On the 3rd of April, Apple is shipping the iPad – that, unlike the Kindle, make you experience media in ways you never have done before. I can’t wait.

But some things fall apart with grace. The iPhone is such a thing. This one in particular has had a broken glass for over half a year now, but it works perfectly. Everything it could do before the crash, it can do now. When some things crack, it’s just to throw away. But this thing has continued to work like nothing could stop it. It is, moreover, amazing to see faces and hear the comments about the broken little crack. “Awwwh, you don’t love your iPhone” or “oooh, what have you done to it?” What other piece of electronics has reached such a level of personal love and affection as the iPhone. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never hold anything, not even my first Powerbook, so dear. And the truth is, that it’s so much more than a device. It does enhance my life in so many ways that if it would be a person, I would be deeply in love, too.

Half a year later, the glass got replaced and the comment was: “it doesn’t feel like my iPhone anymore” which I understand. You wear it and you get used to it, and so when it get all shiny again it feels awkward. But the good thing is, you’ll get used to the new glass, and suddenly you ask yourself: “how could I live with that cracked glass for half a year” and the answer might be: “because I love it”

In november last year I took the most daring decisions I’ve ever done. I decided to quit my job as an architect. After all, that’s what I studied to become. Quitting wasn’t the daring part though. It was the knowledge of knowing that I knew nothing about what I was about to do.

All I had, was a vision. Of how the world could become better place, and life a lot easier. Not my life but the life of most people in the world. A very naive vision, I know. But it was strong enough to make me pursue it.

The vision was, and still is, to make relationships – no matter what kind – easy. To remove all technical and practical boundaries, from the very first date or meeting, through time, and travels – to stay in touch with people you care about.

I also, of course, had an idea of how to solve this. But that was about it. I couldn’t do it myself, that was clear. I couldn’t, and still can’t code. Much to my own chagrin. As an architect, however, I knew how to use all the tools I needed to create the designs I wanted. So imagine the frustration of being zeroed.

So, what did I do? I opened the ‘Entrepreneurship for Dummies 1.0′ chapter 1: Write a ‘Business Plan’. That’s what everyone was telling me. ‘You need a Business Plan’. I didn’t even know what a business plan was. So, by the book, I did write it.

With a Business Plan you can go to Venture Capitalists, and get cash capital. That’s what I read. Today I can laugh at this, but at the time I guess I believed that this fancy 11 pages Business Plan would get us cash. No. It didn’t.

In the book ‘Entrepreneurship for Dummies 1.0′ chapter 3 was all about setting up a ‘Management Team’. CEO, COO, CTO, CIO, COA, CIA and I don’t know what. No! You need to chose people you want to realize this dream with, not who can manage it. That’s a later chapter.

The book completely left out the part which is about: How you realize your dream – your way! Finding the path, that’s suitable for you, and for the idea itself. I don’t care about what the book says. There is no One Way.

In 2005 I had written an e-mail, long before the vision appeared. It was to my good friend Rafa, expressing some blur idea about a ‘communication system, with everything in one place’. It was also Rafa, I first shared my idea with last summer.

All along he was there giving me the most insightful feedback, thoughts, dos and don’ts. It was, in the end, Rafa and I who would start the journey together. And I’m ever grateful for that.

We’ve, since May this year built the foundations for what will become an outstanding platform to crete upon. For everyone. If it woudn’t be because of Rafa, there would be no API, and it sure would not be open. But there is, and it’s open to everyone, with the believe that together we do things better. The sum of many’s ideas together will always be greater than ideas isolated.

I’ve learned so much this year, that my head has been close to explode. And among them, I’ve learned that ‘things take time’ as some smart Norwegian once said. Times it with PI and you might have a more realistic time. I’ve also learned, not to be so fast. As you can imagine I’ve been so eager to show off what we’re building, and to get it out.

It would have been fantastic, to already have released our creation, but it’s shown to be trickier than we thought to get things right. I’m still waiting for the moment I can drop it, but that will have to wait. We’re not far off, I promise. We getting close to PI, but not quite there.

But if this year has been the most exciting so far, I can’t even imagine what next year will bring. I mean, we haven’t even taken off yet. We’re still on the runway, heating up the engines – preparing to let the wings carry us all away to places beyond imagination.

Hold tight, we’re about to take off. Have a pleasant journey.

2009 has, by far, been the most exciting year of my life.
