The (relatively) new is to Send Later. A little like Buffer, but for emails. For those uncomfortable sending emails in the middle of the night (local time), pretending to be early birds, not night owls. I want to see a ‘best time to send emails’ algorithm for a specific person. Now that would be cool.

Four BlackBerrys, each with a different carrier, two iPods - one loaded with guided meditations, the other with world music, an iPad and plenty of books, magazines and newspapers - I love to underline as I read (and no, digital underlining is not the same).

That’s a lot of BlackBerrys. Made me think of a couple of things. How I never ever* travel with more than with a carry-on, how silly it is that she still needs four different mobile devices for different countries / carriers and how I prefer Carl Bildt’s travel pack.

How lovely wouldn’t it be to have one SIM-card only, or none even better, and as you arrive to your destination you simply choose a plan from a list of carriers, and activate it. It really shouldn’t be harder. In the mean-time I’m thinking of an idea regarding this, to simplify for the traveller, if just under the current system of things.

* I’ve travelled twice with more than a carry-on, once when I moved to Australia, and the other when I moved to Spain. In both cases I didn’t know if I would ‘go back’.

My carry-on usually consist of a MacBook Air, an iPhone, passport, chargers and clothes. That’s my office, wardrobe and everything I need.

Kasper, 8yrs, know how to use QR codes.
This might be the most ingenious version of ads I’ve seen. For someone who hates ads like me, this is quite a statement. But I think it’s ingenious because it’s made invisible. The only thing that differentiate this story from any other is the grey text at the bottom ‘Sponsored’. You almost don’t think about it, which is the smart part.

They merges into your daily flow, and are more informative than yelling LOOK AT ME which most ads do. It’s not even asking for anything from you. You can like this page, like any other. But it’s right at the top of my news feed which is where my eyes start every time I load Facebook. It’s ingenious because you don’t notice it’s an ad. And here we have to be conscious, because with a normal ad there’s no doubt it’s an ad, but here you don’t necessarily notice anything.

I’m happy Facebook has gone this way with their advertising, and not the visually disturbing look of most news-sites, where reader is the only way to keep sane.

$6,491,308

$6,491,308:
That’s exactly how much the Pebble project has raised so far on Kickstarter when I’m writing this. They pledged for $100,000, and last time I checked it had just passed $3,000,000, being number #1 as the most-funded project in Kickstarter history. And it’s still 23 days to go, so you can keep fund it. :)

It’s amazing and it’s great to see that there are more ways to get projects going other than the traditional ones, like VC and governmental funding which is slow and awfully time consuming. Pebble raised $1 million in 28 hours. That’s how you get your project up running fast as light. I was talking to a VC not too long ago and I can’t forget when he said crowd funding is crap and doesn’t work. Well, apparently it does.

Life’s Kloutless and then you die.

Life’s Kloutless and then you die.

A Day. May 15.

A Day, a celebration to human kind. A day of inspiration, to inspire the next generation. This is an initiative to make a snapshot of history. Bringing everyone together in a common effort to photograph their day (May 15), and share it with the rest of the world.

We do this all the time nowadays with our mobiles and Instagram. Sharing everyday life with the world have become natural for many, and it’s interesting how a couple of decades ago our photos were only shared with a chosen few, if ever, in the form of photo albums.

A Day has drawn the attention to some quite remarkable people like Richard Branson, Desmond Tutu, Robyn, Martti Ahtisaari and Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations says,

Seeing the world through thousands of prisms on the same day will make us realize the diversity as well as the commonality of humanity.

And there’s really something to that. We’re all photographers, and we’re all viewers of the world. With this project we can all see, on a specific day, how other people’s life looked like, what they saw, what they experienced. That’s pretty magic.

So save the date. Snap a photo. Perfect for stuff, any stuff you find online but don’t have time for right now. I do that all the time, and have been missing a good place to store it. (there’s btw a theme song for this post)

They almost seem to be written with a kind of formula. The founders set out to change the world, and now they will be able to do that in the new home of the buyer. Then the thanks to the investors, friends and users.

I can totally understand the excitement. You’ve been fighting for something for the past few years and finally someone is offering you a ridiculous amount of money and promises your startup will be even better in the arms of the new holder.

But I can’t stop wondering how excited they actually are. Because one of the reason many of us start doing our own thing is just that, doing your own thing. So ending up in a much bigger organisation, with all what that means, at least to me doesn’t sound all that exciting. And then when you’ve been in your new home for a while and they shut your baby down the excitement has probably changed to another emotion.

I wonder because I have no idea, I guess I should really ask some who’ve actually been acquired, how it feels, because I haven’t but I’ll leave you with a couple of snippets of excitements from various founders and acquirers and you’ll quickly see the formula.

Hotspots founders on it’s recent acquisition by Twitter.

We’re incredibly excited to announce that Twitter has acquired the Hotspots.io team!

Starting today, we’ll be joining up with Twitter’s revenue engineering team where our focus will be on developing analytics tools for Twitter’s advertising and publishing partners.

We founded Hotspots.io with the vision of helping companies and individuals maximize their social media ROI through actionable and accessible analytics, and we’re thrilled to be able to continue that work on a much larger scale at Twitter.

Kevin on the Instagram + Facebook announcement:

When Mike and I started Instagram nearly two years ago, we set out to change and improve the way the world communicates and shares. We’ve had an amazing time watching Instagram grow into a vibrant community of people from all around the globe. Today, we couldn’t be happier to announce that Instagram has agreed to be acquired by Facebook.

The Frugalo team on the recent Twitvid acquisition:

We’re extremely excited to announce that Frugalo has been acquired by Twitvid!

When Scott and I started Frugalo last June, we set out to change the way that people discover and share ways to save money. Initially focused on the daily deals space, our first product helped people manage all of their purchased deals (a problem Scott and I faced) and find awesome deals with their friends. Since our December launch we’ve had a great response, nearly 3,500 signed up users and 20k monthly visitors, and we have been really excited about our direction.

Lastly, we want to thank our users for all the help and feedback, our families and friends, and our investors and advisor - especially AngelPad, InterWest, Sierra Ventures, Thomas Korte, Gokul Rajaram and Keval Desai.

Rahul from Rapportive on being acquired by Linkedin:

We are completely beside ourselves with excitement. I have so much I want to tell you, and so much I want to show you. But I need to restrain myself — there’ll be time for that later. For now, let me leave you with one last thought.

And Facebook, from the other side of the table on acquiring Beluga

We’re psyched to confirm that we’ve just acquired the talent and assets of Beluga, whose simple and elegant mobile apps blew us away as a solution to help groups of friends stay in touch on the move. We’re looking forward to welcoming co-founders Ben Davenport, Lucy Zhang and Jonathan Perlow, and we’re excited that the team will continue their vision for groups and mobile communication as part of Facebook.

Marko Ahtisaari on the legendary acquisition by Nokia.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Dopplr has been acquired by Nokia. Nokia shares our vision of the Social Atlas, the idea that social location data can improve our experience of cities.

To see where people on Dopplr go, you can visit the Shepherdess in London, Hakaniemen Halli in Helsinki, or the Hotel on Rivington in New York. We like these places, and we trust you’ll like them too.

The acquisition does not change the current Dopplr service which is available at Dopplr.com

And finally Jyri Engeström about the Google acquisition back in the days:

While it’s too soon to comment on specific plans, we look forward to working with our new friends at Google over the coming months to expand in ways we hope you’ll find interesting and useful. Our engineers are excited to be working together and enthusiastic developers lead to great innovation. We look forward to accomplishing great things together. In order to focus on innovation instead of scaling, we have decided to close new user sign-ups for now. But fear not, all our Jaiku services will stay running the way you are used to and you will be able to invite your friends to Jaiku

Update: talking about Jyri, the news is that Ditto was just acquihired by Groupon.

The driver-less car is becoming more and more of a reality....

The driver-less car is becoming more and more of a reality. It’s going to take another while until it’s ubiquitous, but I think it’s more a question of when than if. Imagine all those car pools that’s beginning to pop up, but with driver-less cars. You request a car on the spot, and you see it’s coming towards you. You get in, and it already knows where you want to go, you go there and you get out. Payment is already solved behind the scenes, and you pay per kilometres/hour or simply a monthly fee. Spotify’s founder Daniel Ek said:

Ownership may be great but the future is about access.

And that’s exactly what I believe will happen. Why do you need to own a car if you can have access to one whenever you need? Think of all the time cars are just parked doing nothing but cost. Instead these self-driving cars could be moving constantly. Oh, and sloppy taxi companies will become obsolete. Win win win.

Atari Predicted The Current Internet Way in 1982

Atari Predicted The Current Internet Way in 1982:

Got this great feeling today when reading LinkedIn: You Are Fired on Om Malik in a Safari window with no status bar and no toolbar. It feels really like an app. In a good way.

SoundCloud Timed Comments

SoundCloud Timed Comments:

A very cool hack to create a story by using SoundCloud’s timed comments. It’s human readable, it’s straight to the point and it’s funny. What more can you expect from a Terms and Conditions. We tried to do something in the same line but this is so much better. It has to be there, you have to <strike>write</strike> copy/paste it no matter how boring it is, and as a user you actually should read it though no-one ever does. And I can’t stop smiling at the very last part, essentially the bottom line for all terms:

Things can happen — we are not responsible.
